What power flushing does, and when a system needs it
Power flushing is a deep clean of a central heating system. A pump is connected across the circuit and pushes water and cleaning chemicals through at high velocity but low pressure, radiator by radiator, lifting the black iron-oxide sludge, scale and debris that has settled in the bottom of radiators, in the pipework and in the heat exchanger. The dirty water is dumped and the system is refilled clean and dosed with inhibitor.
You need it when the symptoms point to circulation rather than a component: radiators cold at the bottom and warm at the top, one or two rooms that never get going, a boiler that short-cycles or clatters, black water when a radiator is bled, or a pump running hot while the house stays cool. Those are all signs the water is carrying debris instead of heat.
We survey before we sell one. Sometimes the honest answer is that you need the system balanced, a valve replaced or an airlock cleared, and a flush would be money spent on the wrong problem. What sludge costs you if the system is never cleaned
Sludge does not settle down and stop. It builds, it circulates, and it moves the cost from a one-off clean to a component replacement.
You pay for heat you never receive
A radiator half full of sludge has half a radiator's output. The boiler runs longer to reach the same room temperature, so you buy more gas for less comfort every single day of the heating season.
Pumps and valves fail early
Circulating grit wears pump bearings and jams diverter and thermostatic valves. Those are parts and labour that a clean, inhibited system simply would not have needed yet.
Heat exchangers block up
Debris restricting a heat exchanger causes kettling, short-cycling and lockouts. Replacing an exchanger costs a large multiple of a flush, and on a new boiler a dirty system can put the manufacturer's warranty at risk.
Corrosion accelerates once inhibitor is gone
Without inhibitor, the internal corrosion that makes the sludge keeps generating more of it. The problem is self-feeding until the water chemistry is reset.

- Draining and refilling after a repair without re-dosing inhibitor, which undoes the protection.

Power flushing detail: methods, chemicals and system types
Not every system is flushed the same way. Age, pipework layout and boiler type all change the method, and getting that wrong is how flushes end up disappointing people.
How the pump actually works
A flushing pump moves a high volume of water at low pressure and reverses the flow on demand. Velocity is what lifts settled magnetite; pressure would simply find the weakest joint. Each radiator is isolated and worked individually, often with the panel agitated, because a whole-system circulation alone will not clear a radiator that has silted solid at the bottom.
Cleaners, neutralisers and inhibitor
A cleaner is circulated at temperature to break the bond between deposit and metal, then neutralised so nothing aggressive is left behind, then the system is dosed with corrosion inhibitor. Skipping the inhibitor is the single most common reason a system sludges up again within a couple of years.
Open-vented, sealed and combi systems
An open-vented system with a feed and expansion tank needs the tank isolated and the water path managed differently from a sealed system on a filling loop. Combi boilers, system boilers with cylinders and older gravity circuits all have their own connection points and bypass arrangements, which is why we identify the system type at survey rather than on arrival.
Magnetic filters and keeping it clean
A magnetic system filter on the return catches the magnetite a system keeps producing and is emptied at each service. Paired with inhibitor and an annual boiler service, it is what turns a flush into a long-term result instead of a temporary one.

How much does a power flush cost?
It depends on the number of radiators, the system type and how heavily sludged it is. The first visit and the written quote are free, with no call-out fee, so you get a firm number before committing.
How long does a power flush take?
Most domestic systems are a single day's work. Larger properties or heavily sludged systems take longer, and we tell you which yours is when we quote.
How do I know if I actually need one?
Cold spots at the bottom of radiators, black water when bleeding, a noisy or short-cycling boiler and rooms that never warm up are the usual signs. We check temperatures on the free visit and will tell you if balancing or a valve is the real answer.
Will it fix my cold radiator for good?
A flush plus inhibitor and, where useful, a magnetic filter addresses the cause rather than the symptom. Without inhibitor, sludge starts building again, which is why dosing is part of the job.
Should I flush before a new boiler?
Yes, on an older system. Old debris entering a new heat exchanger is a common early-failure cause and can affect what the manufacturer expects of the installation.
How often should a system be flushed?
It is not routine maintenance. A properly inhibited system with an annual boiler service and a magnetic filter may never need flushing again; a neglected one may need it once a decade.
