What an unbalanced or failing heating system costs you
Heating faults rarely stay still. They move from inconvenience, to higher bills, to replaced components, in that order.
Cold rooms are paid-for heat going elsewhere
When a circuit is unbalanced, the nearest radiators take the flow and the far ones get what is left. You run the boiler longer to warm one room, and pay to overheat another while you do it.
Repeated pressure loss is a leak you have not found yet
A sealed system that needs topping up regularly is losing water somewhere, a joint, a valve, a radiator, or the expansion vessel. Left alone it becomes a ceiling repair or a boiler fault rather than a plumbing one.
Component failures cascade
A tired pump strains the boiler; a sticking diverter valve means no hot water; a system with no inhibitor destroys pumps and valves in turn. Each one on its own is a modest bill, and together they often exceed the cost of doing the job properly once.
Frozen pipes and winter damage
A system that fails in a cold snap risks frozen and burst pipework in unheated spaces. The heating repair is then the smallest line on the invoice.
Common mistakes we are called out to undo
- Adding radiators to an existing system without checking the boiler output and pipe sizing can carry them.
- Fitting a new boiler to an old, sludged circuit rather than cleaning the system first.
- Turning every thermostatic valve to maximum to fix a cold room, which unbalances the whole circuit.
- Topping up pressure every few weeks and calling it maintenance instead of finding the leak.

Step 5
Balancing, testing and certification

Heating system detail: designs, materials and controls
Below are the decisions that separate a heating system that works quietly for twenty years from one that gets argued about every winter.
System types: combi, system and conventional
A combi heats water on demand and suits homes where peak hot-water demand is modest and mains flow is good. A system boiler with an unvented cylinder suits multiple bathrooms and simultaneous outlets. A conventional open-vented setup still earns its place in some older properties. We size to the property and the household's actual demand rather than defaulting to whatever is quickest to fit.
Radiators, pipework and underfloor
Radiators are sized for the heat loss of the room they sit in, not the space on the wall. Pipework diameter is chosen to carry the flow the far end of the circuit needs, which is why simply adding to an existing run often disappoints. Underfloor heating, including the whole-house installations we have carried out, runs at lower flow temperatures and pairs particularly well with modern condensing boilers and with heat pumps.
Controls, zoning and flow temperature
Room thermostats, programmers, thermostatic radiator valves and zone valves let you heat where you are rather than the whole building. Setting the flow temperature correctly keeps a condensing boiler condensing, which is where its efficiency actually comes from: a detail frequently left at the factory setting.
Water quality, filtration and balancing
Clean, inhibited water and a magnetic filter protect every metal component in the circuit. Balancing then sets the flow through each radiator so the return temperatures match the design; done properly it is the difference between a warm house and a warm hallway.

How long does a full heating installation take?
Most domestic installations are a matter of days, and you get a start and finish date with your written price. Underfloor heating and multi-zone systems take longer.

How long should a central heating system last?
Pipework and radiators are a long-term installation. Boilers and wearing components have a shorter life, which annual servicing and clean, inhibited water extend considerably.
Why is one radiator always cold?
Usually balancing, sludge or a failed thermostatic valve. We check flow and return temperatures before recommending anything, so you are not paying for a power flush when a valve was the problem.
Can you install underfloor heating?
Yes, including whole-house systems. It runs at lower flow temperatures, which suits modern condensing boilers and air source heat pumps particularly well.
