Air source heat pump installation, sized to the property

We install air source heat pumps: the outdoor unit, the indoor connections, the cylinder, the emitter changes the system needs and the controls that decide how much it costs to run. Craig holds the Worcester heat pump qualification, and because we install gas heating as well, the comparison you get is genuinely balanced rather than steered.

A heat pump moves heat rather than burning fuel, and it does that most efficiently when the water it produces is as cool as the house can tolerate. That single fact drives the whole design: bigger emitters, underfloor heating where it fits, a cylinder with a coil sized for lower-temperature reheat, and controls that let the system run long and steady instead of blasting and stopping.

So the work starts with a room-by-room look at heat loss, not a product list. If your property is ready, we design and price the installation in writing. If it needs emitter upgrades or insulation attention first, you hear that before you spend, which is what an assessment from an installer is worth. Air source only: we do not install ground source.

Who it is for

  • Homeowners replacing an old heating system who want to move off fossil fuel
  • Properties with underfloor heating or large radiators already in place
  • Renovations where emitters, floors and pipework are being reworked anyway
  • Anyone holding a heat pump quote that never included a heat loss assessment

When it is needed

  • When the existing boiler is near the end of its life and you want to consider the alternative properly
  • During a major renovation or extension, when emitter changes are least disruptive
  • When you have insulated and improved the fabric and want a heat source to match
  • When you want a realistic answer on running cost for your house, not a national average

Why some heat pump installations disappoint

Heat pumps have a reputation problem created almost entirely by installation shortcuts. These are the four that cause it.

No heat loss assessment

Without a room-by-room calculation the unit is guessed. Guessed high means cycling and wasted capital; guessed low means a cold house on the days that matter most.

Original emitters left in place

Radiators sized for 70°C water do not deliver their rated output at 45°C. Leaving them unchanged is the most common reason a house with a new heat pump feels colder than before.

Flow temperature set too high

Pushing a heat pump to boiler-like flow temperatures to mask an undersized emitter destroys the efficiency you paid for, and turns the electricity bill into the story.

The wrong cylinder

Reusing a cylinder with a small coil means slow reheat and a household that runs out of hot water. It is an avoidable specification error, not a limitation of the technology.

Common mistakes we are called out to undo

  • Treating the installation as a box swap and leaving the system design untouched.
  • Choosing a unit on price per kilowatt rather than on how it will run in your property.
  • Skipping the system clean and inhibitor, so the new equipment circulates old debris.
  • Accepting a handover with no explanation of the controls, which is where the running cost is decided.

How we handle heat pumps, step by step

The same sequence on every job, so you always know what happens next and what it costs before it happens.

Step 1

Free survey and heat loss assessment

Room-by-room heat loss, existing emitters, pipework, hot water demand and outdoor unit location all assessed. No charge, no call-out fee.

Step 2

Design and fixed written price

Unit sizing, emitter schedule, cylinder specification, pipe routes and controls set out and priced in writing, with realistic expectations for flow temperature and comfort.

Step 3

Preparation and system work

Emitters upgraded, underfloor circuits laid where specified, pipework run and the system cleaned, refilled and dosed with inhibitor.

Step 4

Heat pump and cylinder installation

Outdoor unit sited and mounted with condensate provision, indoor connections and cylinder installed, electrical supply and controls terminated properly.

Step 5

Commissioning, testing and verification

Flow temperatures and weather compensation set, system balanced, hot water reheat proven and performance checked against the design.

Step 6

Handover and guarantee

Controls explained in detail, paperwork and manufacturer documentation handed over, and our 12-month guarantee in place.

What you actually get out of it

Worcester heat pump qualified

Craig holds the Worcester heat pump qualification, and the company is an approved Worcester boiler installer too.

Sized for your house

A room-by-room heat loss assessment, not a package chosen from a rate card.

Efficiency designed in

Emitters, cylinder and controls specified so the system can run at low flow temperatures, which is where a heat pump earns its keep.

Balanced advice

We fit gas boilers as well, so if a heat pump is not right for your property this year we will tell you.

One team, start to finish

Emitters, underfloor heating, cylinder, pipework and commissioning all handled in-house.

Insured and guaranteed

£2 million public liability, £1 million employer's liability, and a 12-month guarantee.

Heat pump detail: siting, emitters, cylinders and controls

Every item below is settled at design stage. Together they decide both whether the house is warm and what the system costs to run.

Siting the outdoor unit

The unit needs clear airflow front and rear, a solid level base, sensible distance from bedroom windows and boundaries, and provision for defrost condensate so it cannot ice a path. Pipe runs between outdoor unit and indoor connections are kept short and insulated, because heat lost on the way is heat you paid for.

Emitter schedules and low-temperature output

We produce a room-by-room emitter schedule against the design flow temperature. Some rooms keep their radiators, some get larger panels, and some are far better served by underfloor heating, which we install including whole-house systems. This schedule is the part of the quote worth reading: it is what the comfort of the house rests on.

Hot water: cylinders, coils and reheat

A heat pump cylinder needs a large surface-area coil so it can charge from lower-temperature water in a reasonable time. Capacity is specified around real household use (bath and shower patterns, occupancy, simultaneous demand) and the reheat schedule set so hot water is available when people actually want it.

Controls, weather compensation and water quality

Weather compensation varies flow temperature with outside conditions, which is how a heat pump stays efficient across the season. Long steady running beats aggressive scheduling. Clean, inhibited water and a magnetic filter protect the equipment, just as with any modern heating system.

Variations of this service we carry out

  • Full heat pump changeover

Air source heat pump, cylinder, emitter upgrades and controls installed as one designed low-temperature system.

  • Heat pump with underfloor heating

The strongest pairing available: large low-temperature emitter area throughout, installed by the same team.

  • Assessment and readiness plan

A free assessment and a staged plan where a property needs emitter or fabric work before a heat pump makes sense.

Heat Pumps: your questions answered

How much does an air source heat pump cost to install?

It depends on the heat loss, how many emitters need upgrading and what cylinder the household needs. The survey and assessment are free with no call-out fee, and you get a fixed written price.

How long does installation take?

Longer than a boiler replacement, because emitters, cylinder and controls are usually part of the work. Your written price includes a start and finish date.

Will a heat pump keep my house warm in winter?

Yes, when the emitters and cylinder are sized for the design flow temperature: which is exactly what our assessment establishes before we quote.

Do I need new radiators?

Often some of them. We produce a room-by-room emitter schedule so you can see precisely which rooms need a change and which do not.

Do you install ground source heat pumps?

No, air source only. If ground source is genuinely what a property needs, we will say so rather than fitting a compromise.

How long does a heat pump last?

Equipment life depends on the manufacturer and on maintenance; the system around it (emitters, pipework, cylinder) is a long-term installation when it is designed and protected properly.

Who maintains it afterwards?

We do. The same team installs and maintains it, and our work carries a 12-month guarantee alongside the manufacturer's equipment warranty.

Can you attend quickly if something goes wrong?

We attend same day wherever possible, and emergency call-outs are available during our Monday to Friday 7:30am to 5:30pm operation.

Are you a heat pump installer for Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire?

Yes. Harpenden, St Albans and Luton are our core areas, and we also cover Dunstable, Bedford, Milton Keynes and the wider Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire area.
